Jobs & Jobs
Posted by Bob Barcus on April 4th, 2014
Tonight I finally sat down and decided to do something I have apparently not done in quite some time – write a blog post. I haven’t written anything since the beginning of February, so it’s probably a good idea that I put a few thoughts down and clear my mind.
I took a little time to watch the new Steve Jobs movie with Ashton Kutcher this evening and I must say that I was quite impressed. I know Kutcher took a lot of flak for playing Jobs, but I think he did a pretty good job. The movie really sent the message home that Steve Jobs was somewhat ruthless and extremely driven. Watching that movie was actually quite motivational, which inspired me to look at my own career in a different light.
I really think that there’s more to my little web design business than what I’ve been doing. This past week or so, I’ve completed two major projects, one of which took almost a full year to complete. Needless to say, I’m tired and I need to find a way to work smarter.
One thing I’ve come to realize after seven years in the business is that I really enjoy the smaller projects. I can build the websites fast and get them live on the internet in a much timelier manner.
For example, I was able to build a website for my brother’s small engine business quite quickly this week. After looking at the date and time stamps on the file information, I can honestly say that I started at 10:46 pm Wednesday night and had the entire site live on the internet by 8:49 am Friday morning. That’s less than 36 hours (including sleeping, eating, running my errands, etc.). Now those are the types of websites that I love to create!
Not to say that I don’t enjoy the big paydays that come with major ecommerce projects, but the small sites are quite rewarding. Now I need to figure out how to monetize my true passion. Hmmm…
